Deals Gap Pictures

So besides the 318 corners in 11 miles, another great thing about riding Deals Gap – The Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina is the photographers located in numerous corners of this perfect motorcycle road!

Here are a few pictures we downloaded from 3 of those photographers.

Gotta get some of these blown up for the shop!

We made It……

Yes we are home……

and this site is back up and running…..whew!

We have been home for about a week (what is with this rain) and the grass hay field of our yard has been cut a few times to get it close to a normal level, the mail box has been emptied, the fridge is full and most of the water has been swept out of the basement!  Oh and we got this guy out of the house…..YIKES!!!

Its the size of a cell phone, and we did not find it until day 3 of being home…

So our last ride day – Day 27 (May 24th), from West Virginia, through Pennsylvania, New York and our final border crossing into Ontario! Just a little over 800km today in some really nasty weather.

Going Home Tour – Day 26 (May 23)

From Mike’s Facebook post….

“M&M’s “Go’n Home Tour, 2017” – Day 26 “Country Roads take me home…”: Leaving the Porsche Cayman behind we headed back on the road after a great stop in Virginia with Mark & Tiffany (pics / video to come)… Here’s some helmet pics from our soggy ride today – but the scenery of the twisty roads through Virginia / West Virginia is soooo beautiful – even with a little rain (actually had some dry pavement in the middle of the day). Some interesting gas stops – this is Hyatt who is a retired Afghan translator (for the US, British and Canadian forces) that bought a gas station in Virginia and is living the American Dream – his family lives right beside our home town of Markham, Ontario, Canada. Our next gas stop was equally as social and fun – we didn’t know it at the time but we spent 15 minutes chatting with the local Sherif over some fresh baked cookies made by the gas station attendant / bakery owner – his sister! Hilarious… and good for the sole on a cold rainy day (only 12c). No doubt we couldn’t get “Almost Heaven, West Virgninia….” out of our head today!”

Going Home Tour – Day 24 (May 21)

To VIR in an Aerial Nomad to watch some track activities including Mark doing a few Solo runs in an Aerial Atom.  Also watched Supermoto Motorcycle Racing and Regional type car racing.  Oh the temperature is nothing like it was yesterday, it’s only in the 50’s and raining…not the best day for a ride in an open wheel car!!

Going Home Tour – Day 23 (May 20)

Mike’s Birthday today and we spent a good part of it at the Stanly County Airport in New London,  North Carolina where the group Wanna GoFast temporarily converted the airport into a 1/2 mile drag track.  Oh and it is about 100 degrees F today…a perfect day to stand around on an airport strip!!

Lots of beautiful cars with the fastest cars were into the 245 MPH limit.

Going Home Tour – Day 22 (May 19)

Today we come full circle as we ride into South Boston Virginia and meet Mark on his drive home from work….Later wine on the back deck with Tiffany then on to an excellent dinner…it was December and we were  on our ride to Mexico the last time we were here.

Going Home Tour – Day 21 (May 18)

We found a great use for our fireplace!

Going Home Tour – Day 20 (May 17)

Leaving the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge this morning…..

Arriving at Deals Gap, Highway 129, one of the best known motorcycle roads in North America….and also one of the deadliest, 43 people killed since 2007 since they started keeping track (and the data is out of date by 3 years).

“Designated US 129, the road is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest, with no intersecting roads or driveways to hamper your travel. It is considered “the destination” for thousands of motorcycle and sports car fans.”

The tree of shame, where you do not want to be famous….your bike parts are displayed here if you crash….

Two very excited riders…..we conquered the dragon north bound….

Southbound we conquered it too…but Mike was first on scene for a 75 year old guy who did not have a good day….broken tib/fib and an airlift to hospital.  Mike did a great job of keeping him calm, getting the roads blocked off and getting 911 on the scene…I had the thrill of waiting for Mike at the bottom, hoping that he was not the one who crashed, when he did not show up a few minutes after me.  No problem, as Mike sent a guy in a car down to the parking lot to tell the “Lady in bright yellow” that Mike was ok.

We got this dragon tamed!

Our next ride is along the Blue Ridge Parkway from the very bottom in Cherokee, North Carolina.

To our arrival at the Balsam Mountain Inn…it’s late and we are hungry!

Going Home Tour – Day 19 (May 16)

Tonight we stayed at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge in Western North Carolina where we met more wonderful motorcycle people but we had to say “adios” to our gracious hosts, Jonathan and Trish in Tennessee.  Miss you already!!
